I’ve been enamored with Asian culture and music for a long time. There are some amazing musicians in that corner of the musical landscape, like Guo Gan, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Min Huifen, Takeo Izumi and Guo Yue to just name a few.
For a while I was obsessed with trying to make my bass sound like a koto, which is a fretless Japanese stringed instrument. Its origins come from the Chinese guzheng.
The Chinese erhu is also a very expressive instrument. Played with a bow, it’s like an upright violin. Very hard to replicate that sound.
I got as close as I could by playing my fretless Solar bass through an octave pedal set for ”octave up”, and lots of reverb.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun recording these songs and I hope you enjoy them.
