For the past week or two, I’ve been tracking bass for the new Evergrey album. It’s been quite a different way of working compared to the previous albums we’ve done. In the past, me and Jonas Ekdahl (ex-drummer) would record bass and drums together, live. Then the guitars would be added, as well as keys, vocals and so on. This time drums are recorded last. Simen Sandnes, our new drummer, will record the drums in England with Adam ”Nolly” Getgood at the helm.
Simen will play to the finished guitars, bass, keys and vocals. Kind of ”backwards”, perhaps, but it’s fun to try new ways of working.
I recorded my parts in the comfort of my own home, at a somewhat leisurely pace. That has been a wonderful experience.
For you gear nerds out there:
I used my Solar Guitars AB1.4JN Johan Niemann Signature bass on all the songs. This one I had fitted with passive DiMarzio Model P+J pickups. (There will be an update on this matter)
Rotosound DropZone 65-130 are my strings of choice. BEAD, Drop A and even Drop G were the tunings I used on this album.
InTuneGP GrippX Model XXXw TriTips 0.60mm picks did their duty masterfully.
The bass was plugged into my Darkglass Electronics Infinity pedal. From there I ran two signals into the computer – one with my main sound and one totally clean, in case Nolly wants to re-amp my bass.
Simple.
I must take this opportunity to express my gratitude to everyone at Solar Guitars, Darkglass Electronics, Rotosound Strings, InTuneGP, Richter Straps, Knk Shields, and my new friends at DiMarzio Pickups.
Cheers,
Johan
